Sårbare marine biotoper – modellert utbredelse

Definition: This product series provides spatial raster data on the distribution of vulnerable biotopes and habitats. More information about these can be found in the product sheet and at www.mareano.no. Using species distribution modelling and indicator taxon lists from Buhl‑Mortensen et al. (2019), we produce, for each habitat class with sufficient observations, (1) median predicted densities of indicator taxa and (2) corresponding uncertainty estimates. Observational data are derived entirely from MAREANO video.

Usage

These datasets can be used to highlight areas which may require special management attention, or which warrant additional data collection on the grounds of possible high density of VME indicators, i.e., the potential presence of a VME (Baco et al. 2023). High density doesn’t necessarily mean high biomass – (it can be many small individuals) The layer showing uncertainty can be roughly interpreted as a buffer area around predicted hot spots. The user is advised to check carefully the model accuracy metrics (see product sheet). Note that low CCC can occur when the model captures spatial patterns but is biased or scaled incorrectly in absolute values.

Explanation of assessment of FAIR principles:

There have made various tests to evaluate datasets in relation to the FAIR criteria. These are our interpretations, which then assess the criteria in relation to standards and protocols used for spatial data in Norway and Europe. For more information on which calculations we use for each indicator, look at the details of FAIR assessments for each specific dataset.
