Biodiversity - Video-observed coral bottomtypes

Status: Submitted

Definition: The data set shows observations of different coral bottomtypes (Live Lophelia, Coral remains and Dead Lophelia) which are logged in the field during video survey of the seabed. Coral remains are small skeleton fragments (< 20 cm) of dead Lophelia corals, while Dead Lophelia are larger (>20 cm) fragments of dead coral skeletons. Live Lophelia are colonies of live Lophelia, of different sizes. Together with the seabed topography, these observations give an indication of the extent of the coral reefs locally. The dataset also shows video transects where none of these coral bottom types have been observed.

Usage

The data set can be used as a tool for marine spatial and environmental planning, vulnerability analyses, habitat mapping and in connection with installations on the seabed and activities that may have an impact on the seabed. Furthermore, the data set can be used as a basis for decision-making when assessing new farming licences, discharges into the sea, disposal, development of petroleum-related installations, and regulation of fishing activity.
